Joe 'Tom' Yateley is a former convict trying to leave his criminal past behind. He finds work at the aggressive Hawlett Trucking company, which specializes in gravel transportation and prioritizes speed above all else. The company's drivers face intense pressure, with those failing to meet the high demands swiftly dismissed. Red, the most seasoned trucker, boasts an impressive record of completing 18 runs in a single day. Tom quickly befriends Lucy, the company's secretary, and Gino, another driver. However, Tom becomes obsessed with breaking Red's record, despite Gino's warnings against it. Gino initially advises Tom to abandon his ambitious goal but assists him when Tom insists on pursuing it. Tensions rise when Red and the other drivers unite against Tom, leading to growing animosity. Just as Tom begins to lose hope and considers leaving the company, Lucy reveals that Gino has been involved in a devastating accident. She also confides in Tom about the company's corrupt practices, which further complicates his situation.
