Ma Yuan's acting career began in 2003 with the family comedy《外国小孩中国爸》directed by Qian Xiaohong. In 2004, he appeared in the青春爱情剧《血色浪漫》directed by Teng Wenji, playing the character Zheng Tong, a bespectacled intellectual. In 2007, he acted in the古装历史剧《嘉庆皇帝》directed by Xin Baoqing and He Bing, portraying the character Deng Lin. The same year, he also appeared in《双面胶》directed by Teng Hua tao, playing the role of Qian秘书, the secretary to柳院长. He also starred in《追》directed by Guo Jingyu and Bo Shanshan, portraying a graduate in computer science. Additionally, he played the character Lin Fei in the缉毒剧《缉毒英雄》starring in it alongside Jin Liang and Tian Haifeng. He also appeared in the军旅情感剧《烈日炎炎》, playing the character Chen参谋, responsible for conscription.
In 2009, Ma Yuan acted in《秘密图纸》directed by Wang Zifei and Wang Xiaojuan, playing the character Gao Shukang, a police officer with the Guangzhou公安局. He also starred in《空巢》directed by Liu Xin, playing the role of Xie Yihan, the boss of a home service company. Later that year, he appeared in《情系北大荒》, portraying the character Lü Fuyou.
During 2010, Ma Yuan played the role of Bai Ziyuan, a senior chef in the现实题材电视剧《永不回头》, which reflects the lives of ex-prisoners reintegrating into society. He also starred in《大西南剿匪记》, playing the character Liu Ermu, a college student. In July of the same year, he appeared in《江姐》, a红色传奇剧, portraying Wang步, a comrade-in-arms of Jiang姐. The film《让子弹飞》, in which he participated, was released on December 16th.
Ma Yuan appeared in《景德镇》directed by Teng Wenji in 2011, playing the character Wei Yaozong. He also starred in《曾经与你有个梦》starring in it alongside Liu Feng and Liang Linlin, portraying the role of Lei声.
In 2012, Ma Yuan acted in《迷物》directed by Zhu Jianghua in July and played the role of Xu Zhihong in《完美婚礼》directed by Rong Xue in August.
During 2013, Ma Yuan's film《疯狂的导演》was released on August 30th, in which he played the role of Xiao Zhang, a police officer. He also led the cast in《水木清华》, portraying the character Mei Yiqi, the president of Tsinghua University.
In 2014, Ma Yuan starred in《不是不想嫁》directed by Gan Lu, playing the role of Wang Zhaoyang. He also appeared in the film《客家妈妈》directed by Zhang Hui and in《房车奇遇》released on October 14th, playing the character Wu Yiming.
During 2015, Ma Yuan participated in《羞涩》directed by Xu Huayu and in《七月半之恐怖宿舍》, playing the role of Liu Yang. He also appeared in《北京时间》directed by An Zhanjun, portraying the character Shizhonggong. Additionally, he acted in《老炮儿》directed by Guan Hu, playing a traffic police officer.
Ma Yuan co-starred with Tong Lei and Sa Rina in the年代催泪电视剧《那座城这家人》in 2018, playing the character Wang Daming. The series was broadcast on Hunan Satellite TV on December 2nd.
